The Denver Broncos are making a major move to upgrade their special teams, bringing in one of the most respected minds in that phase of the game. Former New Orleans Saints assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi is officially joining Sean Payton’s staff in Denver, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
An Elite Special Teams Mind Joins Denver
Rizzi, 54, has been coaching in the NFL since 2009 and has built a strong reputation as one of the league’s top special teams coaches. He spent the past five seasons in New Orleans, originally joining the Saints in 2019 when Payton brought him in as the special teams coordinator. In 2022, he was promoted to assistant head coach while retaining his ST duties.
His availability for Denver’s opening came after the Saints hired former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as their new head coach. That led to a staff overhaul in New Orleans, including Rizzi’s departure.
With his wealth of experience, including a stint as Miami’s associate head coach and his recent time as the Saints’ interim head coach last season, Rizzi is a high-profile addition to Payton’s staff.
Replacing Ben Kotwica
Rizzi will take over for Ben Kotwica, who was dismissed following the 2024 season. The Broncos’ special teams unit struggled at times last year, making it a key area for improvement as the franchise looks to take a step forward in 2025.
Given Rizzi’s track record, this hire signals Denver’s commitment to upgrading all facets of the team. With his extensive experience—including serving as an interim head coach for the Saints last year—he’s arguably overqualified for a special teams coordinator role.
Now, the Broncos will hope Rizzi’s expertise helps solidify their special teams and contributes to the team’s overall resurgence under Payton.
