Quarterback Sam Darnold #14 of the Minnesota Vikings
Steelers Exploring Free-Agent QB Market as Fields’ Future Remains Uncertain

With the possibility of Justin Fields reaching free agency growing stronger, the Pittsburgh Steelers are actively evaluating alternative options at quarterback. One name that has surfaced prominently in their discussions is veteran signal-caller Sam Darnold.
According to Steelers On SI, Pittsburgh intends to pursue Darnold once free agency officially begins. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini corroborated this report, stating that the Steelers are expected to make an offer for the former first-round pick.
“The Steelers are expected to make an offer to pending free agent Sam Darnold, per source,” Russini reported on X. “Many around the league believe Darnold will wind up in Seattle, but Pittsburgh is doing its due diligence on any potential options ahead of the new league year.”
A Competitive Market for Darnold
Darnold, 27, has emerged as a coveted free-agent option after a breakout 2024 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings. He threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, demonstrating the ability to lead a high-powered offense. While his play cooled off late in the season, he remains the top quarterback available on the open market.
Seattle appears to be the front-runner for Darnold after trading Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. However, Pittsburgh’s interest signals they are ready to compete for his services if Fields opts to sign elsewhere.
Fields’ Uncertain Future in Pittsburgh
The Steelers have yet to reach common ground with Fields in contract negotiations, leaving his status in limbo. Meanwhile, the New York Jets have emerged as a legitimate contender for his signature, potentially forcing Pittsburgh to pivot toward another veteran option like Darnold.
As free agency looms, the Steelers find themselves in a critical decision-making period at the quarterback position. Whether they can retain Fields or successfully lure Darnold will significantly shape their 2025 season outlook.
