Chiefs Add Veteran QB Gardner Minshew as Latest Backup for Patrick Mahomes
For the third straight offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in a new backup quarterback to sit behind Patrick Mahomes.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew has agreed to a one-year deal with Kansas City. The signing comes just hours after the Raiders released Minshew with a failed physical designation, stemming from a fractured collarbone suffered in a Week 12 loss to the Denver Broncos. The injury ended his 2024 season, and his release raised concerns about whether the collarbone had fully healed.
Minshew, 28, appeared in 10 games for Las Vegas last season, making nine starts. He completed 66.3% of his passes for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Raiders finished 4-13 and last in the AFC West, leading to major coaching and front office changes this offseason.
The Chiefs have shuffled through multiple backup quarterbacks in recent years. Last season, Carson Wentz held the role, appearing in limited action before making a full-game start in a meaningless Week 18 loss to the Broncos. Despite his brief playing time, Wentz was highly regarded by head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes for his leadership and professionalism.
If healthy, Minshew has the potential to be a strong addition to the Chiefs’ quarterback room. Known for his confidence and experience as both a starter and backup, he could provide valuable support in the locker room and on the scout team while being ready to step in if needed during the 2025 season.
