Marcus Maye’s shifts roles from being a master to an apprentice “Willie Gay Jr”

Before the start of free agency, the New Orleans Saints released Marcus Maye, who had played in seventeen games over the past two years with the team but struggled with multiple injuries.

Keith Gay, who will serve as an important depth player for the Saints’ defense, is seen as a valuable addition, particularly given the need for talent behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner at linebacker.

Despite Gay’s arrival, the Saints still need to find a proven safety to fill the void left by Maye. They are monitoring veteran free agents and may also look to draft a safety on day two or three of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Gay’s decision to join the Saints is somewhat surprising, considering he wore number fifty during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs in recent seasons.
