BREAKING NEWS: Steelers Shockingly sweep off Falcons RB.
Shortly after the NFL implemented a new kickoff rule, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed return specialist Cordarrelle Patterson to a two-year, $6 million contract, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The amended rules, following a season with historically low kickoff returns in 2023, are expected to highlight the return game, making Patterson’s role crucial.
Patterson, who previously played under current Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith with the Atlanta Falcons Atlanta Falcons, holds the NFL record for most career kick return touchdowns with nine since entering the league in 2013. This total is three times more than any other player during that period, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
The Steelers’ last kickoff return touchdown was in 2017 when JuJu Smith-Schuster ran one back 96 yards against the Cleveland Browns. The team has struggled to find a consistent returner, using various players in 2023, including Godwin Igwebuike and Anthony McFarland.
Despite seeing reduced playing time with the Falcons in 2023 due to roster changes and previous rule changes favoring touchbacks, Patterson has been a versatile asset. He has lined up as a hybrid running back and receiver, posting a career-best season in 2020 with 1,166 yards from scrimmage.
Drafted 29th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in 2013, Patterson has played in 170 games (60 starts) and has 514 carries for 2,511 yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 298 catches for 2,795 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has also played for the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, and Oakland Raiders.
In addition to his record-setting kick return touchdowns, Patterson ranks 17th all-time in kick return attempts (273), ninth in yardage (7,989), and third in kick return average at 29.3 yards, behind Gale Sayers (30.6 from 1965-71) and Lynn Chandnois (29.6 from 1950-56).
