It’s uncommon in today’s college football landscape for a talented player to stay at the same school for four years, especially when they’ve been a backup and their team has brought in transfers to start as one-year rentals. However, Michigan center Greg Crippen is a unique case.

Since joining the Wolverines in 2021 as the No. 5 center in his recruiting class, Crippen has patiently waited behind experienced starters. In his freshman year, he played in six games but was behind four-year starter Andrew Vastardis. In 2022, Michigan brought in Olu Oluwatimi from Virginia, who had started 32 consecutive games for the Cavaliers, further limiting Crippen’s playing time. Despite high expectations for his junior year, Crippen faced competition from another transfer, Drake Nugent from Stanford, and ended up playing mostly in a backup role.

Now, as Crippen approaches his senior year, he has another opportunity to compete for a starting role. Newly appointed offensive line coach Grant Newsome has praised Crippen’s dedication and maturity, highlighting his technical skills and work ethic. Newsome sees Crippen’s decision to stay at Michigan despite the competition as a positive sign, especially in an era where many players transfer for immediate playing time.

Crippen’s lack of cross-training on the offensive line may be a factor in his bid for a starting role. Players like Karsen Barnhart and Myles Hinton have benefited from playing multiple positions, and it could be key for Crippen as well.Class of 2021 Prospect Profiles: Greg Crippen - Maize n Brew

The upcoming Michigan spring game will be a crucial opportunity for Crippen to showcase his abilities. With hard work and determination, he could secure a starting role for the 2024 season, finally reaping the rewards of his patience and dedication.
