Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has one more season left on his rookie deal, has not yet signed an extension. However, the Dolphins do not need to be concerned about him holding out for a new deal.
“I’m just letting my agent deal with that and talk to the team about that,” Tagovailoa said regarding his contract situation. “My focus is when OTAs come. You know, go to OTAs, show up, and be the best teammate that I can be.”
Tagovailoa, 26, had a standout season in 2023, leading the NFL with 4,624 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, a 101.1 passer rating, and completing a career-best 69.3% of his passes. He also led the league with a 105.5 passer rating in 2022.
Despite his success, injuries have been a concern for Tagovailoa, limiting his playing time in recent years (ribs in 2021 and concussion in 2022).
The Dolphins have a solid record in regular-season games that Tagovailoa has started (32-19) but are 0-1 in the postseason under his leadership. Last season, they lost three of their last five games, missing out on the AFC East title to the Buffalo Bills in Week 18 and losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC wild-card round.
As for Tagovailoa’s next contract, recent deals for young quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts have been substantial. It remains to be seen if Tagovailoa will receive a similar extension.
