Zach Wilson’s return to the quarterback position appeared to be the same old Jets attack for the opening thirty minutes of Sunday’s game against the Texans.
In a soggy first half at MetLife Stadium, the Jets failed to score any points, which was consistent with a season in which they had scored 10 offensive touchdowns in their first 12 games. But what happened in the second half was entirely different.
After Wilson hit Randall Cobb for a touchdown pass to end the first play of the third quarter, the Jets went on to score 23 more points in a 30-6 rout. Wilson posted the third-highest total in a single game of his career, 27-of-36 for 301 yards, in a performance that head coach Robert Saleh referred to as the best of his NFL career.
According to the team website, Saleh described it as “his best game as a professional.” “He brought forth events. He was excellent, in my opinion, today.
After sitting out a game to make room for Tim Boyle, who has since been released, Wilson made a comeback, displaying a talent for understatement when he told the media following the game that “the three years here have been challenging.” Even if one game won’t completely alter the course of those three years, Sunday gave the Jets a much-needed opportunity to laugh amidst the ruins of a season that started out full of promise.
