With an active NFL free agency, the New York Jets’ draft needs for 2024 have narrowed, giving General Manager Joe Douglas more flexibility in the upcoming NFL Draft. Despite this, there seems to be an early indication of who the Jets might select with the 10th overall pick.
The offseason saw significant additions to the Jets roster, including wide receiver Mike Williams and multiple offensive line starters, strengthening both sides of the ball and providing the team with various options for the 10th pick, including selecting the best available player or trading down.
However, every front office, particularly general managers, have their tendencies and preferences, which can be discerned from past drafts and decisions. This insight is what drives the speculation about the Jets’ first-round pick.
ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, speaking on SportsCenter’s NFL Draft preview, emphasized Joe Douglas’s inclination towards linemen, stating that Douglas believes football is won in the trenches.
Given the Jets’ formidable defensive line, addressing this area is unlikely, leaving the focus on offensive linemen. The Jets would likely target one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the draft, such as Olu Fashanu or Taliese Fuaga. While these rookies may not start immediately, they would provide crucial depth, especially considering concerns about the durability of some current offensive linemen, like Tyron Smith.
While selecting a flashy position like tight end or wide receiver might be tempting, Douglas prioritizes talent and depth in the trenches. Given the risks associated with the Jets’ offensive line in 2024, having premium options as backups would be a wise insurance policy.
