During the 2024 NFL offseason, the New England Patriots maintained a cautious approach despite possessing ample cap space, opting for subtle moves rather than extravagant signings.
One such move was acquiring QB Jacoby Brissett on a one-year, $8 million contract from the Washington Commanders. Brissett, who was drafted by the Patriots in the third round in 2016, returned to the team after spending his rookie year with them and starting two games.
Patriots’ de facto GM Eliot Wolf discussed the rationale behind re-signing Brissett in an interview with Mark Daniels of MassLive, expressing confidence in the veteran QB’s abilities:
“We signed Jacoby because he’s a good player. He’s a big, strong, relentless preparer, in terms of his ability to take the game plan and apply it through the week to Sunday. He’s got a good arm, big and strong. We feel like if we end up drafting a quarterback high, he is someone who can support that player who will be a positive influence on them while competing with them.”
Although Brissett saw limited action with Washington last season, starting only three games, he showcased his capabilities during the 2022 season with the Cleveland Browns, starting 11 games and tallying 2,608 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 64.0% completion rate.
As New England likely prepares to introduce a rookie quarterback to the roster next season, Brissett’s experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding the newcomer. With nearly a decade of professional experience under his belt, he presents a reliable option as either a starting quarterback or a top-tier backup.
