Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy has a sense of where he might land in Thursday’s NFL Draft. Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show,” the 21-year-old quarterback hinted at the possibility of joining the New York Giants next season. McCarthy shared his thoughts after being asked by Rich Eisen about his expectations.
“New York Giants, I’ve spent the most time with,” McCarthy stated, via X/Twitter. “They’re a phenomenal staff. (I) love coach (Brian) Daboll, love Mr. (Joe) Schoen, love coach (Shea) Tierney, coach (Mike) Kafka, a Chicago guy. Just being able to go in there, pretty much know most of the install because coach Daboll came from Alabama and coach (Josh) Gattis came to Michigan from Alabama. So, it’s similar formations, motions, plays, all that stuff. So being able to get that install in, it’s been great.
“I met with them twice (and) it’s been amazing.”
Predictions about the Giants’ moves in the draft have varied widely among analysts. ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano suggests New York might seek to trade up to No. 3 for North Carolina’s Drake Maye, while Giants insider Jordan Raanan leans toward selecting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers.
However, speculation linking McCarthy to the Giants has circulated for some time. In March, Connor Hughes of SNY reported on the “buzz” surrounding the Giants’ interest in McCarthy.
According to SNY’s poll, “league sources spoke highly of McCarthy,” with one high-ranking executive expressing confidence that he’ll transition well to the professional level. McCarthy’s performance as Michigan’s starter has garnered attention, boasting impressive records in both seasons, with notable improvements in his second year.
As draft day approaches, the Giants’ potential moves remain uncertain, but the possibility of McCarthy joining the team adds to the intrigue surrounding their decisions.
