The Minnesota Vikings are grappling with uncertainty at the wide receiver position beyond Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, leading to speculation about potentially signing veteran Tyler Boyd.
According to sources cited by KSTP’s Darren Wolfson, discussions with Boyd have not yet occurred, although Wolfson did not rule out the possibility of the Vikings pursuing the veteran wideout later in the offseason.
Originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016, Boyd earned a notable four-year, $43 million contract extension in 2019 following a standout 2018 season, where he exceeded 1,000 receiving yards and scored seven touchdowns. Despite the emergence of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, Boyd has maintained a consistent role, averaging 67 receptions and 752.3 yards receiving over the past three seasons.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) projected Boyd to command a two-year, $16.5 million contract in free agency, citing his proficiency as a big slot receiver with reliable blocking skills and a knack for finding soft spots in defensive zones.
Boyd’s potential alignment with the Vikings coincides with the timelines of Jefferson and Addison, offering an opportunity to bolster the team’s receiving corps as they transition to a new starting quarterback.
The departure of K.J. Osborn in free agency has left a void at the WR3 position for the Vikings, although Brandon Powell has shown promise in filling that role. Boyd’s addition would provide valuable depth and experience, particularly given his size and ability as a blocker.
While discussions with Boyd have yet to materialize, the Vikings remain in a position to explore options to enhance their receiving options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
