First-round quarterback cautions Vikings rookie J.J. McCarthy about Sam Darnold

Former Cleveland Browns first-round pick Johnny Manziel recently discussed the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation on his podcast with The Action Network. While the Vikings selected J.J. McCarthy in the draft with an eye towards their future quarterback, Manziel suggests that Sam Darnold’s presence on the team could complicate matters.

Manziel, who has worked with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown during his time in Cleveland, believes Darnold will be a significant challenge for any newcomer to the Vikings’ quarterback room. Despite Darnold’s struggles with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, Manziel sees him as a talented quarterback who has been waiting for the right opportunity.

Manziel also compares McCarthy and Darnold, highlighting their different strengths. Darnold is known for his arm talent, reminiscent of quarterbacks like Brett Favre and Tony Romo, but has faced criticism for his decision-making. McCarthy, on the other hand, is praised for his football IQ and decision-making abilities, although he may need to develop his arm strength further.

The situation is intriguing for the Vikings, as they must weigh whether McCarthy is an upgrade over their current options. Darnold, at just 26 years old, still has time to mature and could potentially redefine his career with the Vikings. However, if McCarthy proves to be a strong contender, the Vikings may face a difficult decision regarding their future quarterback.
