The ongoing question throughout the offseason has been whether New Orleans Saints star cornerback Marshon Lattimore will be traded. Since the season ended, Lattimore has been the subject of continuous trade rumors, with the franchise’s statements adding to the confusion.
The Saints’ decision to draft Kool-Aid McKinstry, a highly regarded cornerback prospect, in the second round of the draft further fueled speculation about Lattimore’s future. This increased speculation prompted a new statement from Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, offering more clarity this time.
In an interview with Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio, Loomis was asked about McKinstry’s selection and its implications for Lattimore. He explained that it doesn’t indicate anything about Lattimore’s future, emphasizing the team’s need for depth at the cornerback position. Loomis stated that Lattimore is not on the trading block, but he did acknowledge that teams can sometimes make offers that are too good to refuse.
While the possibility of a trade remains, Loomis’ statement is more definitive than previous comments from him or head coach Dennis Allen. However, this raises questions about why the organization has been vague about Lattimore’s future. Unless a team presents an exceptional trade offer, it appears that Lattimore will remain with the Saints for the upcoming season.
This is positive for the Saints, as Lattimore is a quality cornerback when healthy. His recent injury concerns, playing only 17 games over the last two seasons, have been the main issue. If he can stay healthy, he will lead a talented secondary that includes Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor, and Kool-Aid McKinstry.
