Breaking News: Oklahoma State Bid Farewell to Quarterback

Former Oklahoma State backup quarterback Gunnar Gundy, son of Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy, will be joining Division II Emporia State for the upcoming season. Having graduated from Oklahoma State in December, Gunnar is transferring as a graduate student and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Gundy redshirted during the 2021 season and played in four games each in the following two seasons. In 2023, he completed 62% of his passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. He was part of a three-quarterback rotation early in the season, sharing playing time with Alan Bowman and Garret Rangel.

Oklahoma State football: Can Gunnar Gundy handle being starting QB?

Gundy initially joined the Cowboys as a walk-on in 2021 despite receiving multiple FBS offers. As a redshirt freshman in 2022, he played in four games, completing 19 of 39 pass attempts for 247 yards and three touchdowns, along with 70 rushing yards on 19 carries. Notably, his 10-yard quarterback sneak helped secure a 17-6 lead against Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl, marking a significant moment in his career.

Following the Big 12 Championship game, Gundy entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on December 6 as a graduate transfer. He briefly committed to Ohio before re-entering the portal. During the spring, he worked in Oklahoma State’s football office while continuing his training.

Gundy will now compete for the starting quarterback position at Emporia State, which had a 9-3 record last season. He is expected to vie for the role against Daron Bryden, a transfer from Stony Brook, and long-time backup Chase Ricke. Emporia, Kansas is just a three-hour drive from Gundy’s hometown of Stillwater, a much shorter trip compared to the 14-hour drive to Athens, Ohio.

With Gundy’s departure, Oklahoma State’s 2024 roster includes five quarterbacks: Alan Bowman, Zane Flores, Garret Rangel, Maealiuaki Smith, and freshman walk-on Garret Wilson from Edmond.
