The Reds have re-signed infielder Edwin Ríos to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Louisville, where he’s in the starting lineup tonight. Ríos became a free agent on Monday after being designated for assignment. He’ll again serve as a non-roster left-handed bat. Earlier this year, Ríos signed a minor league deal and has primarily played in Louisville, posting a .243/.340/.486 slash line with 11 home runs and an 11.8% walk rate over 50 games. However, he also struck out nearly 29% of the time. He briefly played for the Reds when Jake Fraley was unavailable, appearing in five games and going 1-for-9 with a walk.
Ríos has a career .202/.290/.455 batting line over parts of six MLB seasons, mainly playing at the corner infield positions. He has notable power, with 21 home runs in 335 MLB plate appearances, but also a high strikeout rate, fanning in over a third of his major league at-bats.
