Breaking News: Packers Head Coach Grapples with Heartbreaking Departure of Key Safety

Former Green Bay Packers safety Adrian Amos has secured a new team ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Amos is set to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the specifics of the deal weren’t disclosed, Schultz shared the news on X.

Amos is the second former Packers safety to join the Jaguars this season, following the earlier signing of former first-round pick Darnell Savage.

Does Adrian Amos Have Anything Left in the Tank?

Although Amos is approaching the latter stages of his NFL career, he will aim to contribute to the Jaguars’ defense this season.

Amos may not have been a standout name recently, but the Jaguars are hopeful he still has some valuable play left for the 2024 season.

In college, Amos was a steady and dependable starter for Penn State. Although he didn’t receive significant national attention, he played in 48 games, accumulating 149 tackles, 16 pass breakups, and seven interceptions.

Due to the lack of hype, Amos was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 draft by the Chicago Bears, who made a shrewd choice. Amos quickly became a starting safety for the Bears, maintaining that role throughout his four seasons before signing a four-year, $37 million contract with the Packers.

During his time in Green Bay, Amos missed only one game and set a career-high with 102 total tackles in the 2022 season. He was a reliable and steady presence for the Packers.

However, age has begun to affect Amos’s performance. Last season, he split time between the New York Jets and Houston Texans, struggling to secure a starting spot with either team.

At 31 years old, Amos aims to regain a starting role with the Jaguars in 2024.

Green Bay’s Revamped Safety Room

The Packers’ safety unit is dramatically different from just a couple of seasons ago.

Xavier McKinney is now the standout safety for Green Bay, having signed a four-year, $67 million contract this offseason in hopes of making an immediate impact.

However, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst wasn’t content with just one new addition. He went all in on safeties during the 2024 draft, selecting Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo.

Bullard is currently projected as the starter on the first unofficial depth chart. Though he is somewhat smaller, he was known for his instinctive and fearless play at Georgia. His experience with two national championships should aid his transition to the NFL.

Williams is also a player to watch. The former Oregon and Fresno State safety has impressed early in training camp with his aggressive, downhill play, which aligns with the expectations of new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

With Joe Barry out and Hafley in, it’s a new era for the Packers. At least one of these new safeties is expected to emerge as a key starter for the 2024 season.
