ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Browns are signing defensive end Marcus Haynes, who was last with the Denver Broncos in 2023. This move comes in response to Pro Bowl edge-rusher Za’Darius Smith’s knee injury sustained in practice yesterday.
Haynes initially joined the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent from Old Dominion but didn’t make the final 53-man roster, eventually landing on the practice squad. He then signed with the Houston Texans in late February but was waived a few months later.
While this signing doesn’t necessarily indicate a severe issue with Smith, adding a healthy player helps maintain competition and roster depth. If Smith’s injury proves to be serious, veteran edge-rushers like Yannick Ngakoue and Carl Lawson are still available.
The Browns might have considered signing more established veterans, but it’s training camp, and unexpected talents can emerge. Haynes has the chance to impress the coaching staff and potentially secure a roster spot, despite the challenge of competing with Myles Garrett at the position.
