Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell assured that running back Jahmyr Gibbs and cornerback Terrion Arnold are “going to be fine” after both players exited Monday night’s training camp with injuries.
Gibbs and Arnold, both former Alabama standouts, were acquired by the Lions in consecutive first rounds of the NFL Draft, with Gibbs going 12th overall in 2023 and Arnold being selected 24th in 2024.
While NFL teams aren’t obligated to disclose injury details during the preseason, reports suggest Gibbs suffered a hamstring injury and Arnold a pectoral injury.
“Two days ago, my phone was blowing up,” Campbell shared during an interview on “Costa and Jansen with Heather” on WXYT-FM in Detroit on Wednesday. “I had people panicking, saying ‘What happened to Gibbs? Oh my God, TA! It’s over.’ But I think we’re going to be fine.”
Gibbs, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie after rushing for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, didn’t participate in the Lions’ preseason opener on Thursday. Arnold, however, started in Detroit’s 14-3 loss to the New York Giants. Arnold played during the first three possessions of New York’s offense but didn’t record any stats over 13 snaps.
Ennis Rakestraw, Detroit’s 2024 second-round pick from Missouri, started at the other cornerback position against the Giants but also left Monday’s practice with an ankle injury.
“TA was having a good camp before his injury,” Campbell added. “And Ennis is having a good camp too.”
