Carl Lawson’s recent free agent whirlwind has landed him a new opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the veteran edge rusher is finalizing a deal with Dallas, adding a seasoned pass rusher to their defensive line.

Lawson, who emerged as one of the top edge rushers available after his stint with the New York Jets, has been actively pursuing opportunities since the end of his contract. The 29-year-old, formerly with the Cincinnati Bengals, recorded 20 sacks over four seasons before joining the Jets with high expectations in 2021. However, an Achilles injury sidelined him for an entire season, and while he rebounded with seven sacks in his Jets debut, his 2023 season was significantly less impactful. Lawson played just six games and failed to record a sack or quarterback hit, which contributed to his prolonged stay on the open market.

Earlier this month, Lawson was among four pass rushers the Cowboys hosted, although a deal did not materialize immediately. While Al-Quadin Muhammad and Shaka Toney secured contracts with Dallas following their visits, Toney was waived/injured shortly thereafter. This development prompted the Cowboys to revisit Lawson, who has since agreed to a deal for the remainder of training camp, reportedly worth significantly less than the three-year, $15 million contract he previously signed with the Jets.

Dallas’s defensive depth chart is anchored by stars Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, with Muhammad and second-round rookie Marshawn Kneeland expected to fill rotational roles following Sam Williams’ ACL tear. Lawson will now have the opportunity to prove himself and secure a spot on the roster during training camp, potentially positioning himself for a more lucrative contract next offseason if he can return to his former level of production.

As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, Lawson’s addition could provide valuable depth and competition on the edge, reinforcing their defensive line as they head into the critical weeks of training camp.
