“With Josh Jacobs replacing Aaron Jones as the starter and third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd emerging as a dynamic option, Dillon might find himself as the third back on the depth chart,” Fowler wrote on August 16. “Exploring the market for Dillon could yield a draft pick for Green Bay, especially if they can find a team in need of a veteran ball-carrier.”
Dillon’s performance last season, where he averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry and recorded just 613 rushing yards, failed to meet expectations. Despite receiving more carries than Jones, Dillon’s output was disappointing, leading to questions about his future with the team.
The Packers’ decision to draft Lloyd out of USC with the No. 88 overall pick signals their intent to invest in new talent. Dillon’s lackluster performance in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns—where he rushed for only 2 yards on 4 carries—further complicates his standing with the team.
While Dillon has shown he can contribute in the passing game, with 86 receptions for 763 yards and 2 touchdowns over his career, the Packers’ signing of Jacobs and drafting of Lloyd suggest they are ready to move forward with a new-look backfield.
If Dillon is at risk of missing the 53-man roster cut, it could be prudent for Green Bay to explore trade options. Though the return might be modest—likely a late-round pick—Gutekunst has proven adept at maximizing the value of late-round selections in the past.
