Disheartening Move: Eagles Release Veteran Tight End

The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah and re-signed interior offensive lineman Jason Poe, according to the team’s announcement.

Veteran Uzomah’s release was anticipated, as he had a challenging performance during training camp and preseason games. BGN’s Jonny Page noted recently that Uzomah struggled to contain the Patriots’ EDGE defenders and had issues with run-blocking. His preseason play fell short of expectations, and his blocking, which was supposed to be a key strength, was subpar.

At 31, veteran Uzomah’s career has been marred by injury issues, which may have affected his performance. When the Eagles signed him in April, he was expected to compete for the role of Jack Stoll’s replacement. However, veteran Uzomah’s inability to perform well in blocking and his limited impact in the passing game contributed to his release.

The Eagles’ roster now includes six tight ends: Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, E.J. Jenkins, Albert Okwuegbunam, Armani Rogers, and Kevin Foelsch. Goedert will start, with Calcaterra having secured the TE2 position. Jenkins is a strong contender for the TE3 spot but isn’t guaranteed a roster spot.

Poe’s return gives him a chance to participate in the Eagles’ preseason finale on Saturday before likely being waived again. The team must reduce its roster from 90 to 53 players by the 4:00 PM Eastern deadline on Tuesday, August 27.
