In a surprising move that underscores their ongoing roster adjustments, the Seattle Seahawks have traded outside linebacker Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears, securing a 2025 sixth-round pick in the deal. This transaction marks the second trade by the Seahawks in as many days, following their acquisition of linebacker Michael Barrett from the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.
Taylor, a second-round pick in 2020, has been a steady contributor over the past three seasons. Despite missing his rookie year due to a leg injury, Taylor has appeared in 49 games, starting 13 of them. His tenure in Seattle has been marked by notable defensive play, including 91 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 21.5 sacks. His impressive performance in 2022, where he tied for the team lead with 9.5 sacks, made him a key figure in the Seahawks’ defensive schemes.
The trade for Taylor, who joins a Bears team in need of pass-rushing prowess, reflects the Seahawks’ intent to reshape their linebacker corps. Seattle’s outside linebacker rotation, which includes Uchenna Nwosu, Dre’Mont Jones (now transitioning to outside linebacker), Boye Mafe, and Derick Hall, will now proceed without Taylor. The team has also added undrafted rookies Nelson Ceaser, Jamie Sheriff, and Sundiata Anderson to their depth chart.
In a related move, the Seahawks have re-signed cornerback Willie Roberts, an undrafted rookie out of Louisiana Tech. Roberts initially participated in Seattle’s rookie minicamp as a tryout player and has now been brought back into the fold. Last season at Louisiana Tech, Roberts made a significant impact, starting all 12 games and ranking ninth nationally with 12 passes defensed. He also recorded 38 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. His strong performance earned him a first-team All-Conference USA selection and highlighted his ability to limit opponents’ success in the passing game, holding them to a 34.8 percent completion rate when targeted.
These moves reflect the Seahawks’ strategic approach to fortify their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season. With Taylor’s departure and Roberts’ return, the team continues to fine-tune their lineup, aiming to enhance their defensive capabilities and address key needs as the season approaches.
