Eagles Secure Gritty Defensive Lineman in Bold Waiver Claim
During his four seasons at Alabama, defensive tackle Byron Young played alongside four current Philadelphia Eagles – guard Landon Dickerson, cornerback Eli Ricks, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and offensive tackle Tyler Steen.
On Thursday, Young rejoined his former Alabama teammates with the Eagles, as Philadelphia claimed him off waivers after he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday.
To make room for Byron Young on their 53-man active roster, the Philadelphia Eagles waived defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu, who had been listed as Jordan Davis’ backup on the depth chart.
Young initially survived the Raiders’ roster cut from preseason size to the regular-season limit on Tuesday. However, after Las Vegas was awarded defensive back Thomas Harper and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu as waiver claims on Wednesday, Young was one of the players let go to accommodate the new additions.
Young was a third-round pick for the Raiders last season, but the No. 70 overall selection saw limited action as a rookie. He played in six games, logging 99 defensive snaps and 13 special-teams plays, and recorded four tackles in 2023.
During the Raiders’ three preseason games this month, Young was on the field for 83 defensive snaps. He tallied three tackles, one sack, and one pass breakup.
Philadelphia also has another Alabama alumnus on its roster, quarterback Jalen Hurts, though Hurts did not play with Young during their time at the Crimson Tide.
