Lions Secure Super Bowl Champion Safety in High-Stakes $48 Million Deal

The Detroit Lions have finalized their initial 2024 roster ahead of Week 1, showing improvement in several areas after a productive offseason.

However, there may still be some gaps to address before the season starts, particularly on the defensive side. Despite bolstering the defensive backfield through free agency and the draft, a potential void might still exist.

Bleacher Report highlighted each roster’s biggest weakness heading into the season, pinpointing the Lions’ defensive backfield. Their recommended fix? Signing Super Bowl champion safety Jalen Mills, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and briefly the New York Giants.

“The Lions’ need for a cornerback was well-known this offseason, and while the front office made several additions, adding another player could be beneficial, especially with Emmanuel Moseley on injured reserve,” the report noted.

“Mills would be a strong candidate due to his versatility in covering both the boundary and slot, and his ability to play safety if needed. His 73.5 passer rating when targeted last year, according to Pro Football Focus, would be a valuable asset.”

Mills could step in to address the gap left by Ifeatu Melifonwu’s injury, if it becomes a prolonged concern.

Technically, the Lions could add Mills right away, as they currently have 52 players on their roster. This is likely to change before the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

When asked about leaving a roster spot open, Dan Campbell emphasized the importance of flexibility.

“It’s really for flexibility. It allows us to make a move if necessary, to add someone. We’ll have a clearer picture in the next 24 to 48 hours of how we want to approach the game and who we want to take into it. This could influence roster decisions, practice squad placements, and more. It just gives us room to maneuver.”

If the defense needs reinforcement in the coming days, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Lions consider a veteran like Mills.
