Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur Issues Defiant Statement on QB Before Week 2

When the Green Bay Packers acquired Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans just before the 2024 NFL season began, he was primarily seen as a practice squad QB meant to help the team prepare for dual-threat quarterbacks.

That view quickly changed, however, as Willis now finds himself stepping into the emergency QB1 role due to Jordan Love’s injury sustained during the Packers’ 34-29 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1.

With Love expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks, Willis is set to make his first start with the Packers this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field. Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur is confident in Willis’s readiness.

“He’s put in a lot of time and effort,” LaFleur stated, according to Packers.com editor Mike Spofford. “He’s worked hard, learned the terminology, and can execute the play calls. We trust him. Given a full week of preparation and practice, I’m confident he’ll perform well.”

Willis had limited involvement in the Eagles game, playing only a few snaps after Love’s lower-body injury. Previously, Willis had appeared in just 11 NFL games with three starts during his time with the Titans. Despite his limited experience, he will face an immediate test as Green Bay’s starter.

In his three NFL starts, Willis has recorded 234 passing yards and three interceptions on 25-of-49 completions.
