In a surprising move just two weeks into the 2024 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs have waived veteran tight end Peyton Hendershot. The decision comes on the heels of a controversial incident in Week One and amidst mounting concerns about the team’s roster depth.

Hendershot’s release follows a $5,472 fine imposed on him after a clash with Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith. The incident occurred when Hendershot shoved Smith on the sideline following a disputed hit on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The altercation not only sparked controversy but also seemed to cast a shadow over the tight end’s role with the team.

Previously a backup option for Dallas Cowboys’ star tight end Dalton Schultz, Hendershot had been brought to Kansas City with the hope of providing support to Travis Kelce. Despite his potential, Hendershot’s NFL career stats—141 receiving yards and two touchdowns since 2022—reflect his struggle to establish himself as a starter. His role with the Chiefs was largely seen as a safety net, and his numbers were not exactly game-changing.

The timing of Hendershot’s departure is particularly notable given the Chiefs’ current situation. The team has had a stellar start to the season, but injuries have begun to pile up. Running back Isiah Pacheco is expected to miss most of the regular season due to a fractured fibula, leaving a significant gap in the backfield that the Chiefs will need to address swiftly.

With Hendershot now off the roster, Kansas City faces the challenge of finding a replacement to back up Kelce. This move may indeed serve the team better in the long run, as the early-season drama surrounding Hendershot has been less than ideal. The Chiefs must now turn their attention to strengthening their tight end position and filling the void left by Pacheco’s injury.

As Kansas City navigates these changes, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see who the team brings in to bolster their roster. Will they look for an experienced veteran or promote from within? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: the Chiefs are not afraid to make bold moves as they aim for another successful season.
