The Dallas Cowboys have been forced to make adjustments to their defensive line after placing defensive tackle Jordan Phillips on injured reserve. Phillips, who was traded to the Cowboys from the New York Giants in August, suffered a wrist injury in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns. The injury will keep him sidelined until at least October 27th, when the Cowboys face off against the San Francisco 49ers.
In response, the Cowboys acted quickly, poaching defensive tackle Carlos Watkins from the Washington Commanders’ practice squad to bolster their depth. Watkins is no stranger to Dallas fans, having previously played for the Cowboys in 2021 and 2022. His standout year came in 2021 when he recorded 32 tackles and even snagged a pick-six, making a notable impact in Dan Quinn’s defense.
Watkins, 30, is an eight-year NFL veteran who has started 37 games and appeared in 72, amassing six career sacks, 139 tackles, and one forced fumble. Drafted by the Houston Texans in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Watkins brings a wealth of experience to a Cowboys team looking to maintain its defensive dominance amid key injuries.
With Phillips out and Watkins stepping in, the Cowboys hope to fill the void and keep their defensive line strong as they navigate the early part of the season.
