The Baltimore Ravens may be off to a rough 0-2 start this season, but the front office has still found a way to secure a key player for the long haul. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Ravens have agreed to a 2-year, $6 million contract extension with running back Justice Hill, a move that further solidifies the team’s depth at a critical time.

Rapoport tweeted on September 20, “Sources: The #Ravens and RB Justice Hill have agreed to terms on a 2-year, $6M contract extension. A nice deal for an underrated core player for them in his sixth year.”

Hill’s Commitment to Baltimore

For Hill, this extension represents more than just a pay raise—it’s a declaration of loyalty to the franchise. Speaking with Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, Hill shared how important staying in Baltimore is to him: “I just come to work every single day. I wasn’t paying much attention to (the contract). … I’m a Raven, man. This is where I want to be. Grass isn’t always greener on the other side.”

This mindset reflects Hill’s commitment to the team’s culture and his willingness to do the dirty work—something head coach John Harbaugh values deeply.

A Utility Weapon for the Ravens Offense

Hill’s extension is a nod to his versatility. While Derrick Henry serves as the Ravens’ primary back, Hill has made the most of his opportunities, proving to be an excellent complement with his speed and agility. Despite Henry’s presence, Hill has maintained his role in the offense, thanks to his ability to make plays in space, both as a runner and receiver.

His six receptions for 52 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 highlighted his utility in the passing game, while his 5.5 yards per carry against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2 show his effectiveness on the ground. With Keaton Mitchell close to returning from the PUP list, Hill will still likely see significant playing time due to his unique skill set.

Special Teams Importance

Perhaps Hill’s greatest value, though, is on special teams—a facet of the game that has been uncharacteristically shaky for the Ravens this season. The team has struggled in nearly every area of special teams, from missed field goals by future Hall of Fame kicker Justin Tucker to inconsistent punting by Jordan Stout.

Hill’s ability to contribute as both a coverage player and a returner is vital. His memorable return against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023 proved how impactful he can be in critical moments. With the Ravens allowing opponents to average 29.3 yards per kickoff return this season, Hill’s presence in coverage will be crucial as Baltimore looks to tighten up its special teams unit.

The Need for Stability

At 26 years old, Hill’s experience and reliability are exactly what the Ravens need to salvage their season. After losing J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards to free agency, Hill’s consistent play offers stability in a backfield that’s still in transition. He’s not just a fill-in; Hill is a multi-phase player who thrives in niche situations, often against unfavorable matchups.

In Week 1, Hill was tasked with blocking Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones—a daunting challenge for a player of his size. Yet, Hill’s grit and determination on such assignments are why Harbaugh trusts him on the field, particularly in critical third-down situations.

A Smart Investment

By securing Hill through 2026, the Ravens have made a smart investment in a player who contributes across all three phases of the game. While Baltimore’s 0-2 start has raised concerns, keeping core players like Hill locked in is essential to righting the ship. The Ravens are in a tough spot, but Hill’s leadership, versatility, and tenacity could play a pivotal role in helping the team get back on track.

Baltimore might not be shopping for new talent just yet, but making sure they hold onto a key cog in their machine shows they’re still in it for the long haul.
