Back in January, Aaron Jones was one of the key reasons the Green Bay Packers made an unexpected run to the NFC Divisional Round. Over a remarkable five-game stretch, Jones delivered five consecutive 100-yard games, including a memorable three-touchdown performance that helped secure a playoff victory against the Dallas Cowboys. His heroics also included a dominant win over the Minnesota Vikings, where he capped off the victory by taunting their sideline with a “loser” sign on New Year’s Eve.

Fast forward to today, and Jones finds himself not just on the other side of that rivalry—but thriving. Now a Viking, Jones is off to a fantastic start to the 2024 season and even claims he’s having the most fun of his career in Minnesota. He’s averaging 5.4 yards per carry over three games and is preparing for a revenge game against his former team at Lambeau Field in Week 4.

As expected, Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about Jones during his first press conference of the week, and his response struck a perfect blend of humor and respect.

LaFleur’s Response to Facing Aaron Jones

When a reporter asked LaFleur what the biggest challenge was in trying to slow down Jones after having coached him for years, LaFleur smirked and quipped, “Who?” The light-hearted moment drew laughs, but LaFleur quickly followed up with a genuine answer.

“Yeah, he’s a problem, and he looks really good,” LaFleur admitted. “He’s one of my favorite players that I’ve ever had the privilege to coach in terms of how he goes about his business. I’ve still got a love for him. I just won’t have a lot of love for him when we’re playing against him.”

That sentiment perfectly captures the bittersweet feeling Packers fans must have. Many still hold a soft spot for Jones, who was a fan favorite during his time in Green Bay. However, it’s been tough watching him don the Vikings’ purple and join in with the “Skol” chants.

Packers Rely on Their Own Rushing Attack

Despite Jones’ departure, the Packers haven’t missed a beat when it comes to their rushing game. Josh Jacobs, the Packers’ new lead back, has started the season on fire, racking up 278 rushing yards in three games—placing him among the top five rushers in the league. Green Bay currently leads the NFL in rushing, averaging an impressive 204 yards per game.

However, the Packers’ defense will have their hands full when they face Jones this week. The former Green Bay star put up 102 yards against the Houston Texans in Week 3 and shows no signs of slowing down. For Jeff Hafley’s defensive unit, finding a way to contain Jones will be crucial if the Packers hope to slow down the Vikings’ surging offense.

Jones’ Revenge Game

As Jones heads into his first game against his old team, it’s clear he has a point to prove. His tenure in Green Bay ended on good terms, but there’s no doubt he’ll be looking to make a statement on the field against the team that let him walk.

For the Packers, LaFleur acknowledged the respect and admiration he still holds for Jones, but there’s no room for sentiment when the whistle blows on Sunday. With both teams battling for NFC North supremacy, Aaron Jones is no longer a Packer—and that’s a big problem for Green Bay’s defense.
