The Washington Commanders have been one of the pleasant surprises of the season, largely due to the rise of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. His breakout performances have put the team in a favorable position in the league, and fans are buzzing about the possibilities for the franchise. As Washington continues its ascent, one name that has come into the spotlight for a different reason is running back Austin Ekeler.

Ekeler, who joined the Commanders during the offseason on a two-year, $8.43 million deal, has been sidelined with a concussion. However, he is optimistic about returning for Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns. After missing last week’s game, Ekeler participated in a limited practice Wednesday, showing signs of progress in his recovery. He expressed hope in a locker room interview, stating that he feels good and is nearing the final stages of concussion protocol.

“It’s tough watching from the sidelines, but I’m excited to get back on the field with my teammates,” Ekeler said. The next practice, which will involve pads, is expected to be a critical test of his readiness for Sunday’s game.

In Ekeler’s absence, Brian Robinson Jr. took over and had a stellar performance, rushing for 101 yards and scoring a touchdown. Jeremy McNichols also impressed, contributing 68 yards and two touchdowns. Their strong showing highlighted the Commanders’ depth at the running back position, raising questions about Ekeler’s future in Washington’s offense.

NFL analyst Nick Villano from Fansided recently suggested that the Commanders should consider trading Ekeler, especially given the recent success of their backup running backs. Villano argued that with the team thriving even without Ekeler, the Commanders might be better off flipping him for additional assets before the trade deadline.

“Jayden Daniels is lighting it up and carrying the team, while Brian Robinson and Jeremy McNichols are delivering on the ground,” Villano wrote. “The Commanders didn’t seem to miss Ekeler in their win against the Cardinals, which opens up the possibility of a trade.”

As Washington prepares for its Week 5 matchup, Ekeler’s status remains a pivotal storyline. Should he pass his final tests and return to the lineup, his versatility and experience would undoubtedly provide a boost to the Commanders’ offense. However, with Robinson and McNichols proving they can carry the load, and trade rumors swirling, Ekeler’s long-term future with the Commanders remains uncertain.

For now, the team remains focused on the present, hoping to get their star running back healthy for a crucial divisional game against the Browns. The Commanders are in a good position, and if Ekeler returns to full strength, their offense could reach even greater heights. But with trade possibilities looming, the coming weeks will be critical in determining the future of both Austin Ekeler and the Washington Commanders.
