New England Patriots center David Andrews has made the tough call to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, ending his 2024 campaign prematurely. After suffering a torn rotator cuff during the Patriots’ Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers, Andrews faced the difficult choice between playing through the pain or opting for surgery, with his long-term health and career in mind. The 32-year-old chose the latter, focusing on a full recovery and a hopeful return to the field in 2025.

In the latest episode of his podcast, Quick Snap, Andrews explained the reasoning behind his decision, emphasizing that the goal was to ensure his football career could continue. “I feel like I’m making a good decision. I’m making the best decision for myself and more importantly, my football career,” he told co-host and former teammate Brian Hoyer.

Before the injury, Andrews had played an impressive 1,607 consecutive snaps dating back to November 2022. However, that streak came to an abrupt end when he tore his right rotator cuff, the same shoulder that required surgery after the 2021 season. “In ‘21, I did both labrums, the same rotator cuff, and my bicep,” Andrews said. “Now, I’ve torn it in the meat of it. The doctors are trying to put a sheath over it to help the muscles regrow. It’s not a 100 percent, but it gives me the best shot to continue my football career.”

The injury is a blow to the Patriots, as Andrews has been an anchor for the offensive line, but his decision to prioritize long-term health is a calculated one. He consulted Dr. Matt Provencher, the Patriots’ former team physician, and other medical professionals, who all agreed that surgery was the best path forward with an eye toward the 2025 season.

Despite the optimism for a successful recovery, Andrews acknowledged the frustration that comes with such a decision. “It’s tough. It’s part of this business,” he said. “The game’s been so good to me. I’ve been good to the game. At the end of the day, it does take a lot from you, and it takes a lot from your family and friends.”

Reflecting on the sacrifices made throughout his career, Andrews added, “You do a lot, you try to give your best to this game, and sometimes it wears its nasty hat. This is one of those moments.”

For the Patriots, losing their veteran center is a significant challenge, but Andrews’ focus is now on healing and making a return next season. With a long history of resilience and leadership, he is determined to overcome this setback and continue his journey in the NFL.
