The Buffalo Bills are gearing up for a pivotal Monday night showdown against the New York Jets, and they’ll have their top running back, James Cook, ready to go. After being listed as questionable earlier this week due to a toe injury sustained in last week’s loss to the Houston Texans, Cook’s agency confirmed his plans to play. ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the update, saying, “Bills Pro-Bowl RB James Cook will practice today despite his toe injury and plans to play Monday night vs. the Jets.”

This is welcome news for the Bills, who have been hit hard by injuries this season, and Cook’s presence in the backfield could give their offense a much-needed boost.

Boost to the Bills’ Backfield

James Cook has been a reliable force for the Bills, amassing 309 rushing yards on 70 carries with two touchdowns this season—already matching his total from his first two full seasons. Despite being limited in practice this week, his participation was confirmed by ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg, who noted that Cook was seen during the portion of practice open to the media.

The Bills have made a concerted effort over the last two seasons to improve their running game in order to relieve some pressure from quarterback Josh Allen and the passing attack. With Cook back in action, Buffalo’s backfield will be better equipped to regain offensive momentum after two consecutive losses.

Wide receiver Khalil Shakir, who missed last week’s game against the Texans, remains questionable for the Jets matchup, but there’s optimism for other offensive weapons. Both wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins, who were also dealing with injuries, should be available for Monday’s game, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Defensive Struggles Continue for Buffalo

While the offense gets a boost with Cook’s return, the Bills’ defense continues to battle adversity. Linebacker Matt Milano has been out since the start of the season, and fellow linebacker Terrel Bernard has missed time as well. Defensive lineman Ed Oliver will also miss Monday’s game due to a hamstring injury.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope for the Bills’ defense. Cornerback Taron Johnson, who was injured during the team’s season opener, is listed as questionable for Monday but may be ready to return to the lineup.

Bills Look to Rebound Against a Reeling Jets Team

Monday night’s matchup is critical for the Bills, who are looking to avoid a three-game skid and maintain their position atop the AFC East. A loss to the Jets would not only drop the Bills to 3-3 but also allow New York to tie their record and hold a key tiebreaker.

The Jets have their own internal issues to contend with, having fired head coach Robert Saleh earlier this week despite a 2-3 start. This turmoil may give the Bills an advantage, but McDermott made it clear that he won’t seek any insider information from Saleh on how to attack the Jets.

“I wouldn’t do that. It’s not in my nature or what I believe in. I wouldn’t put a person in that position,” McDermott stated when asked about the possibility of reaching out to Saleh for insight.

The Bills will look to capitalize on the Jets’ uncertainty while getting back on track with their own key players returning. With the division on the line, Monday night’s game promises to be a crucial contest for both teams.
