The Pittsburgh Steelers are making a key addition to their active roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, elevating wide receiver Brandon Johnson. This move comes as rookie receiver Roman Wilson is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury suffered during Thursday’s practice.
Johnson’s promotion brings familiarity to the Steelers’ offense, as he shares a close connection with starting quarterback Russell Wilson. The duo spent two seasons together in Denver after Johnson signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Their bond runs deep, with Johnson even having a locker next to Wilson’s during their time with the Broncos, a relationship that could prove valuable for Pittsburgh’s offense this week.
Over his career, Johnson has recorded 26 receptions for 336 yards and five touchdowns. Earlier this season, he was elevated for the Steelers’ matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, though he managed just one reception in that game. Despite limited production, Johnson is a known deep-ball threat, and with his chemistry with Wilson, he could provide a much-needed spark if Roman Wilson is unable to suit up.
With versatile playmaker Cordarrelle Patterson also sidelined due to an ankle injury, Johnson’s addition gives the Steelers another option in their receiving corps. If Roman Wilson is unable to go, Pittsburgh will have five receivers available, creating more flexibility in the passing attack as they prepare to take on the Jets.
