As the Pittsburgh Steelers head into their Week 9 bye, they’re making strategic roster adjustments to set up for the second half of the season. The team recently waived outside linebacker Adetokunbo Ogundeji from the 53-man roster, as NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported. Additionally, running back La’Mical Perine and defensive back Thomas Graham were released from the practice squad, signaling potential shifts in the team’s depth strategy.

Ogundeji, who’s toggled between the practice squad and active roster throughout the season, may still have a future with the Steelers. His expected return on a practice squad deal would keep him on standby, ready for call-up if depth at outside linebacker is needed. Perine, however, may be a different story. The former New York Jets fourth-round pick has been a journeyman since 2021, briefly seeing action with the Kansas City Chiefs last season. With the Steelers’ running back group now healthier, Perine’s role as a reserve backfield option is less essential.

Graham, another casualty of this roster reconfiguration, was initially competing for the nickel cornerback role but was ultimately edged out by rookie Beanie Bishop. Bishop’s emergence, punctuated by three interceptions over the past two games, has cemented his place in the lineup, leaving little room for Graham. Graham joined the Steelers after a stint with the Chicago Bears and appeared in one game this season, but it seems his opportunity in Pittsburgh has run its course.

These roster moves align with the team’s decision to reinstate veteran cornerback Cameron Sutton. Sutton’s suspension was lifted on October 29, and he’s set to rejoin the team after the bye week. Sutton’s return strengthens a cornerback unit that includes emerging talents like Joey Porter Jr. and Bishop, alongside Donte Jackson, C.J. Henderson, and James Pierre. With a reinforced secondary and a refreshed roster, the Steelers aim to enter Week 10 ready to continue their push toward the playoffs.
