The Minnesota Vikings made a savvy move last offseason by signing Sam Darnold to a one-year deal, but now they must turn their attention to their quarterback situation for 2025. Rookie J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in this year’s draft, will miss his entire first season due to a preseason knee injury and surgeries. Meanwhile, Darnold’s solid performance could see him earn nearly $32.5 million annually in free agency, according to Spotrac.
Backup Nick Mullens has been serviceable but has a career record of 5-15 as a starter, including an 0-3 finish with the Vikings last season. His contract ends after this season, and with McCarthy expected to take over as the starter, Minnesota may not need to spend on a QB until next year.
An intriguing option for the Vikings could be Daniel Jones, recently released by the New York Giants despite a $160 million contract extension in 2023. After struggling in recent seasons, Jones may have a tough time securing a starting role, but Minnesota offers a favorable situation as a backup. The Vikings could sign him to a low-cost deal for the remainder of 2024 and keep him through 2025 as a potential backup or insurance policy if McCarthy faces health issues or struggles to transition into the starting role.
This move would also provide Jones with a solid opportunity to rebuild his value, especially given the Vikings’ strong roster. With Darnold’s $10 million salary coming off the books, Minnesota has the financial flexibility to bolster the position next spring.
