As of the latest update, the outlook on Preston Smith’s injury is concerning, according to comments made by Coach LaFleur on Thursday. The absence of Smith from practice raises serious doubts about his availability for the upcoming crucial game.

LaFleur’s statement, “Anytime he’s not out there, it’s real,” underscores the significance of Smith’s potential absence. Throughout this season, Smith has been the linchpin and inspirational leader of the Packers’ defense, making his potential absence a considerable setback for the team. Defensive coordinator Joe Barry’s unit has faced challenges, and Smith’s leadership has been instrumental in navigating those challenges.

In the 16 games of the current season, Smith has been a defensive force, accumulating 46 total tackles, eight sacks, two forced fumbles, and four defended passes. If Smith is unable to participate in the upcoming game, it could create a notable void that the defense must address, especially against the surging Justin Fields and the Bears’ offense.

The absence of Smith could open up a significant opportunity for Lukas Van Ness, the 2023 first-round pick. Despite having a limited role this season, the rookie has showcased his skills with 30 tackles, three sacks, and a defended pass. While Van Ness may not directly replace Preston Smith, he presents a promising option for the team.

Updates on Smith’s injury and recovery progress are expected in the near future. The hope is that he can recover in time to contribute to the Packers’ defense in the upcoming game against the Bears.
