It may be a case of poor timing for the Kansas City Chiefs regarding any further additions at wide receiver. With a couple of new faces already brought in since the season started, players returning from injury, and limited salary cap space, they may be done with shopping for now.
However, it’s worth noting that the Denver Broncos have released wide receiver Josh Reynolds, a player the Chiefs had previously shown interest in during free agency.
Reynolds was signed by the Broncos to a two-year deal worth up to $14 million last spring, with $9 million guaranteed. His addition came after the trade of Jerry Jeudy and was expected to help veteran quarterback Bo Nix as he transitioned from playing with Jared Goff in Detroit.
Unfortunately, Reynolds’ tenure with the Broncos was short-lived. A hand injury in Week 5 required surgery, and during his time on injured reserve, the Broncos found offensive success, particularly with Nix’s development and their strong defense.
Reynolds was activated in mid-November, but the Broncos chose to cut him instead of keeping him on the roster after his 21-day practice window ended.
For the Chiefs, adding Reynolds at this stage doesn’t seem necessary. While they faced some depth issues at wide receiver earlier in the season, the acquisitions of JuJu Smith-Schuster and DeAndre Hopkins, along with the return of Hollywood Brown from injury, should provide ample support moving forward.
Nevertheless, it’s significant that the Chiefs had previously expressed interest in Reynolds, including during his 2021 free agency, when he ultimately chose to sign with the Tennessee Titans.
In his brief stint with the Broncos, Reynolds recorded 12 catches for 183 yards and 1 touchdown. Over his eight-year career, the 29-year-old has accumulated 232 receptions, 3,116 yards, and 20 touchdowns.
