Kenneth Walker III Out for Week 17: Why It Might Be a Blessing in Disguise for the Seahawks
As the Seattle Seahawks prepare for their must-win Week 17 matchup against the Chicago Bears, one thing is certain: Kenneth Walker III will not be on the field. The star running back, plagued by leg injuries throughout the season, will miss his fifth game of 2024. While his absence might seem like a blow to the team, there’s an argument to be made that the Seahawks might actually benefit from his sidelining this week.
Walker, Seattle’s most explosive back when healthy, has struggled to replicate his 2023 form due to injuries and a subpar run-blocking offensive line. His stats tell part of the story: averaging just 3.7 yards per carry this season, Walker’s production has been hampered by hesitation in his running style—similar to another Michigan State alum, Le’Veon Bell. This patient approach can yield big plays behind a strong offensive line, but with Seattle’s poor run blocking, it often results in tackles for loss.
Charbonnet’s Opportunity
In Walker’s absence, backup Zach Charbonnet has proven to be a reliable alternative. Charbonnet, a more straightforward, downhill runner, has been effective despite the team’s offensive line struggles. In his four starts this season, Charbonnet has rushed for 317 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry—far better than Walker’s season average. His ability to hit the hole quickly and grind out tough yards has made him a better fit for Seattle’s offensive limitations.
A Coaching Challenge
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s play-calling has also been under scrutiny. In Week 16 against the Minnesota Vikings, Walker received just eight carries, a puzzling decision in a critical game. Grubb’s tendency to abandon the run against tougher opponents has hurt the Seahawks’ offensive balance. The Bears, however, present a much softer challenge; they’ve lost nine straight games and are ranked near the bottom in most defensive metrics.
Thursday Night Football presents a golden opportunity for Grubb to commit to the run. Charbonnet should see at least 20 carries, and RB3 Kenny McIntosh could also play a complementary role. Against a struggling Bears team, the Seahawks must establish the ground game early and stick with it.
What’s at Stake
At 8-7, the Seahawks are fighting to stay alive in the NFC playoff race. While the Bears are not the toughest competition, every game is crucial as Seattle looks to solidify its postseason aspirations. Charbonnet’s ability to grind out yards could be the key to sustaining drives, controlling the clock, and keeping the pressure off quarterback Geno Smith.
Kenneth Walker III’s absence is undoubtedly a loss, but with the right game plan, it could open the door for a more effective and balanced Seahawks offense. Thursday’s game will test whether Seattle can capitalize on this opportunity and keep their playoff hopes alive.
