Green Bay Packers Poised to Snag DJ Reed from New York Jets

Green Bay Packers Eye Potential Secondary Upgrade with Free Agent DJ Reed

The Green Bay Packers head into the 2025 offseason with a clear mission: bolster the secondary. While their 2024 season saw promising moments, the passing defense remained average, ranking 15th in the league with 3,959 passing yards allowed. With injuries and impending free agency creating uncertainty in the cornerback room, the Packers must prioritize reinforcements to remain competitive in a high-powered NFC.

Secondary Setbacks in 2024

The Packers’ defensive struggles were amplified by the loss of All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. Without their lockdown defender, the unit faced inconsistencies, exposing the need for depth and dependability in the secondary. Adding to the challenges, cornerback Eric Stokes is set to hit free agency, leaving a potential void in a crucial position.

Could DJ Reed Be the Answer?

One name gaining traction in Green Bay circles is New York Jets cornerback DJ Reed. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox highlighted Reed as a top free agent fit for the Packers in 2025.

“Cornerback DJ Reed may not garner as much attention as he deserves heading into free agency,” Knox wrote. “He played on a bad Jets team this season and has largely been overshadowed by Sauce Gardner in New York. However, the 28-year-old has been a top-end starter since joining the Jets in 2022.”

Reed, whose three-year, $33 million contract with the Jets is set to expire, has consistently delivered high-level performances despite playing in the shadow of the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year. In 2024, he continued to showcase his ability as a shutdown corner, combining excellent coverage skills with a physical style of play.

A Perfect Fit in Green Bay

The Packers are an intriguing landing spot for Reed. The connection runs deep, as former Jets head coach Robert Saleh now serves as an offensive consultant for Green Bay. This familiarity could pave the way for Reed to transition seamlessly into the Packers’ system.

With his versatility to play both outside and in the slot, Reed could address multiple needs for Green Bay. Pairing him with a healthy Jaire Alexander in 2025 would give the Packers a formidable cornerback duo capable of challenging the NFL’s elite passing attacks.

The Cost of an Upgrade

Targeting Reed won’t come cheap. As one of the premier cornerbacks hitting the market, he is likely to command a significant deal. However, the Packers have a history of making aggressive moves to address critical needs, and Reed’s ability to elevate the secondary could be worth the investment.

What’s Next for the Packers?

With the offseason looming, the Packers have tough decisions ahead. Re-signing Eric Stokes could be an option, but if they’re looking for a proven, dependable presence, DJ Reed is an enticing target. As Green Bay seeks to make another playoff push in 2025, fortifying the secondary with a player of Reed’s caliber may be just what the team needs to take the next step.

The Packers have seen firsthand how injuries and depth issues can derail a season. By pursuing Reed, they’d be investing in stability and star power, solidifying their defense for years to come.
