Panthers Add Depth with Signings of Boogie Basham and James Mitchell
CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers continue to shape their roster during the offseason, announcing the addition of two players on Tuesday. The team signed outside linebacker Carlos “Boogie” Basham and tight end James Mitchell to reserve/future contracts, signaling their intent to bolster depth heading into the 2025 season.
Basham Brings Defensive Grit
Basham, a 27-year-old outside linebacker, joins the Panthers with experience and familiarity at the top of the organization. Drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills out of Wake Forest, Basham’s career has included stops with both the Bills and the New York Giants. Notably, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan was part of the Bills’ front office when Basham was selected, potentially giving him unique insight into Basham’s potential.
Basham has appeared in 40 games over his four-year career, recording 4.5 sacks. While his production may not have reached its peak yet, the 6-foot-3, 281-pound edge rusher has the tools to contribute to Carolina’s defense, especially in rotational pass-rushing situations.
Mitchell Adds Versatility at Tight End
On the offensive side, the Panthers added 25-year-old tight end James Mitchell. A fifth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2022, Mitchell has spent time honing his skills on the Lions’ practice squad.
The former Virginia Tech standout has appeared in 30 NFL games, amassing 13 receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown. At 6-foot-4 and 246 pounds, Mitchell brings a solid combination of size and athleticism to the tight end position, which could prove valuable as the Panthers look to enhance their offensive versatility.
Strategic Moves for the Future
Reserve/future contracts allow teams to secure players who weren’t on an active roster at the end of the season, giving them an opportunity to compete for a spot during training camp. For the Panthers, these moves represent calculated risks with potentially high rewards.
With Basham and Mitchell in the fold, the Panthers add depth and competition to key areas, setting the stage for what promises to be a pivotal offseason under head coach Frank Reich. Both players will have the chance to prove their worth as Carolina continues its efforts to build a roster capable of contending in the NFC South.
The Panthers’ offseason plan is clearly taking shape, and these signings might be just the beginning.
