Falcons’ New Hires Could Pave the Way for Star Jets LB Jamien Sherwood

The Atlanta Falcons’ defense has undergone a significant transformation with the addition of two former New York Jets coaches, potentially setting the stage for the team to pursue standout linebacker Jamien Sherwood in free agency.

On Friday, the Falcons announced the hiring of defensive line coach Nathan Ollie and defensive pass game coordinator Mike Rutenberg. Both bring familiarity with defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, hired earlier this month. Ollie served as the Jets’ assistant defensive line coach in 2021, while Rutenberg was the team’s linebackers coach from 2021-2024.

The Atlanta Falcons have plenty of familiarity with New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood.

Why Sherwood Could Be a Game-Changer for Atlanta

The Falcons are entering the offseason with a clear need at linebacker to pair with Kaden Elliss, who delivered a stellar 2024 campaign with 151 tackles, five sacks, and eight tackles for loss. While Nate Landman and Troy Andersen filled the role alongside Elliss last season, both struggled with injuries. Additionally, rookie J.D. Bertrand showed promise but may still need time to develop.

This is where Jamien Sherwood fits perfectly. The 25-year-old linebacker enjoyed a breakout season in 2024, starting 16 of 17 games for the Jets and logging an impressive 158 tackles, including an NFL-high 98 solo tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and two sacks. His performance was even more remarkable considering he began the season as a backup to C.J. Mosley, who missed most of the year with injuries.

Sherwood’s journey to success is a testament to his work ethic and versatility. A converted safety, he earned praise from Ulbrich for his athleticism, leadership, and physical tools, standing at 6’2″, 216 pounds with 34-inch arms. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed—he was named the Jets’ Most Valuable Player, as voted by his teammates.

“You’d be hard-pressed to find a harder worker, not just here, but across the entire NFL,” Ulbrich said. “Sherwood’s future is bright, and he’s someone every team will want on their roster this offseason.”

Strong Ties to Falcons’ Coaching Staff

Sherwood’s connection to Atlanta’s new coaching staff runs deep. Rutenberg scouted Sherwood in college, supported his transition from safety to linebacker, and stood by him during his rookie season-ending ankle injury. Sherwood credits Rutenberg’s guidance on and off the field, stating, “He’s always available, whether it’s midnight or midday. As a player, that kind of support means everything.”

Ulbrich and Rutenberg both commended Sherwood’s development, highlighting his leadership, preparation, and physical transformation since entering the league.

The Challenge: Atlanta’s Cap Space

While Sherwood’s fit with the Falcons seems ideal, the team’s financial situation could complicate the deal. Atlanta is currently projected to have negative-$10 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap, ranking 28th in the league.

The Falcons have options to free up cap space, but they also face pressing needs at other positions, including pass rushers, cornerbacks, and a starting safety to complement Jessie Bates III.

Final Thoughts

If Atlanta can create enough financial flexibility, the addition of Jamien Sherwood would provide a much-needed boost to the Falcons’ defense. His familiarity with the coaching staff, leadership qualities, and proven track record make him a valuable asset that might be too tempting for Ulbrich and Rutenberg to pass up.
