Detroit Lions Re-Sign Special Teams Standout Ezekiel Turner

The Detroit Lions have secured key depth and special teams talent by re-signing safety and linebacker Ezekiel “Zeke” Turner to a one-year, $1.25 million contract. Turner, a former Washington Huskies standout, proved his value after joining Detroit midway through last season, earning himself another year with Dan Campbell’s squad.

A Versatile Playmaker with a History of Impact
During his collegiate career at Washington from 2014 to 2017, Turner played under head coach Chris Petersen, contributing to a program that rose to national prominence. He played in 38 games, recording 71 tackles and two interceptions, while also establishing a reputation for physicality and reliability. His special teams excellence shined, earning him four Special Teams Player of the Week honors and co-Special Teams MVP during Washington’s 2016 College Football Playoff season.
One of Turner’s most memorable moments came in the 2017 Apple Cup against Washington State, when he intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards just before halftime, helping secure a dominant 41-14 victory.
From Undrafted Rookie to Special Teams Ace
After going undrafted in 2018, Turner found his footing with the Arizona Cardinals, where he made an immediate impact. The Cardinals transitioned him from a collegiate defensive back to a linebacker, and he thrived in his new role. As a rookie, Turner played in all 16 games, finishing third in the NFL in special teams tackles and earning a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie Team.
His ability to contribute in multiple phases of the game made him an ideal fit for Detroit, where his familiarity with the system and success under special teams coordinator Dave Fipp played a role in the team’s decision to bring him back.
A Low-Risk, High-Reward Move for the Lions
Turner is expected to provide depth behind Derrick Barnes at linebacker while continuing his role as a special teams gunner. His return adds stability to a unit looking to rebound from a disappointing playoff loss to the Washington Commanders last season. With a relentless motor and a history of making plays in critical moments, Turner’s presence could be invaluable as the Lions aim for a deeper postseason run in 2025.
For Detroit, bringing back a proven contributor at a team-friendly price is a smart move. If Turner continues to excel in his role, he could play a key part in the Lions’ quest for sustained success.
