Breaking News: Auburn Tigers hired a new defensive coordinator.

Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze offers insights into the Tigers’ upcoming participation in the Music City Bowl and outlines the program’s offseason agenda on December 16 at the Woltosz Football Performance Center in Auburn.

A former player for Auburn University and a seasoned NFL assistant coach has secured his inaugural role as a defensive coordinator. The Washington Commanders revealed on Monday thats would assume the position, marking a significant milestone in his coaching career. Whitt Jr. will join newly appointed head coach Dan Quinn as part of the inaugural coaching staff for Washington.

Whitt, a native of Auburn, attended Auburn High School before continuing his education at Auburn University, where he graduated in 2001. During his time at Auburn, Whitt played football for three seasons, initially joining as a walk-on receiver in 1998 before earning a scholarship.

His father, Joe Whitt Sr., had a notable coaching career at Auburn, spanning 25 years. He was first brought on by Pat Dye in 1981 to coach outside linebackers. Over the years, Whitt Sr. served on coaching staffs under Dye for twelve seasons, Terry Bowden for six seasons, and Tommy Tuberville for seven seasons.

Whitt Jr. initiated his coaching journey at Auburn, starting as a student assistant until 2001. Following this, he spent five seasons coaching at the collegiate level. His initial coaching role was at The Citadel, where he managed wide receivers. He then transitioned to Bobby Petrino’s coaching staff at Louisville, serving as the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator for the subsequent four seasons.
