The Falcons traded a franchise quarterback..

In the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft set for April 25 in Detroit, the Atlanta Falcons presently hold the No. 8 pick. However, in the latest mock draft by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, it’s speculated that they’ll orchestrate a trade to secure their future franchise quarterback.

Zierlein anticipates that Atlanta will negotiate with the Chargers, who currently possess the No. 5 pick. Subsequently, the Falcons would select UNC QB Drake Maye with that pick.

“New head coach Raheem Morris has an abundance of offensive weapons, but he requires someone to lead the charge,” Zierlein notes. “Despite Maye’s inconsistency last season, his remarkable traits and potential make him an attractive option for Atlanta.”

While it may seem unlikely for Maye to fall to the fifth pick, given that most experts have projected him to go within the top three, Zierlein suggests a scenario where a surge in wide receiver selections occurs, such as the Patriots drafting Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 3 and the Cardinals selecting Washington’s Rome Odunze at No. 4.

Although it’s uncommon for New England to pass on a quarterback, draft night often brings surprises. In such a scenario, Atlanta could capitalize on the opportunity.

Maye, despite his relative rawness with only two years of starting experience, has showcased impressive stats, throwing for 7,929 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions from 2022 to 2023. Zierlein believes he would be an immediate starter over quarterbacks Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke.

As for the Chargers, Zierlein suggests they’ll secure Alabama CB Terrion Arnold with the No. 8 pick.

“Arnold’s style aligns with the press corner approach utilized by Jim Harbaugh at Michigan,” Zierlein comments. “Cornerback stands out as one of the Chargers’ top needs.”

According to NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah, Arnold could potentially be selected as high as fifth overall, supported by his impressive stats in 2023, including 63 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, five interceptions, and 12 passes defensed.

In summary, trading down to acquire additional draft assets while securing arguably the best corner in this year’s draft could prove to be a wise move for Los Angeles and potentially create a win-win scenario for both sides.
