Breaking News: The Miami Dolphins loss an experienced linebacker.

“The Dolphins intend to release veteran LB Emmanuel Ogbah today, according to a source. Miami signed Ogbah to a four-year, $65 million contract after he recorded nine sacks in consecutive seasons in 2020 and 2021.”

The decision makes practical sense for Miami. Despite the higher-than-expected 2024 NFL salary cap, the Dolphins face significant challenges in aligning with the cap and have further hurdles if they aim to retain key free agents. Releasing Ogbah clears nearly $14 million in cap space.

Ogbah’s reduced playing time in 2023 hinted at his impending departure, especially as he struggled to excel in the 3-4 scheme introduced by new Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. While Fangio has moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles, Ogbah finds himself in search of a new team.

Ogbah is likely to attract interest from multiple teams in free agency, given his proven ability to be productive, although he may not justify his previous $65 million contract.

The linebacker achieved nine sacks in consecutive seasons for the Dolphins from 2020 through 2021 and has amassed at least 5.5 sacks in a single season for three different teams over his career. Miami initially acquired Ogbah after his 2019 season with the Chiefs, during which he recorded 32 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble despite only playing 10 games due to a torn pectoral muscle.

Ogbah, who played college football at Oklahoma State, was initially drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 32nd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
