Since head coach Kevin Stefanski’s arrival in Cleveland in 2020, decoding the organization’s messaging has become more challenging. Stefanski often speaks at length without revealing much.
As he prepares to address the media in Indianapolis around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, a significant question remains unanswered: who will be the team’s primary play-caller? Stefanski briefly introduced new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey during his last public appearance but refrained from making any definitive statements.
“It’s February 5,” Stefanski emphasized. “What’s most important is putting this offense back together with Ken leading the charge. And that’s why he’s here and really pleased to have him here.”
It’s unlikely that Stefanski will provide many more details during his NFL Combine press conference. Dorsey was brought in to work closely with Deshaun Watson and bring a fresh perspective to the offense. However, it’s improbable that Stefanski is ready to make such an important announcement less than a month after Dorsey’s arrival, especially before he has the opportunity to collaborate more closely with Watson and the rest of the offense. Stefanski typically takes his time with these decisions.
It’s more probable that Stefanski will determine the play-calling responsibilities once the team’s offseason program begins later this spring. Nonetheless, the question will undoubtedly be asked on Wednesday, and observers will eagerly analyze Stefanski’s response for clues.
